In week 2 we discussed on Dunbar’s number and it’s relevance towards today’s social media. The question raised was “Do you think Facebook or other social sites have changed the upper limits of friendship (Dunbar’s number) set by nature?”
There are two parts of this, in having the hundreds or even thousands of online friends, how many of those do we actually see in person and how often do we communicate? This can determine how valuable the friendship is and therefore communicating with everyone on a regular basis would be difficult as some people may have more time than others and receiving updates from your closest friends would be favored as more ‘important’ than to receive updates from distant almost ‘stranger’ friends. Users are given the option to limit who they receive post’s from and who sees their post’s. This silences any annoying friends and makes the social network more enjoyable.
The second part as to why people choose to have more friends would be for the purpose of marketing themselves (name branding) by their profession or by developing strong connections with more powerful people to get noticed therefore creating a fan base of followers resulting in the demand of time from their friends or people interested to climb the ladder of admiration/status.
